Canadians Kick Start World Juniors With Sprint Event in Italy

A young Canadian team of four men and four women took to the trails this morning in the sprint event at the FIS Nordic Junior World Championships in Tarvisio, Italy.  Conditions for the athletes were spring-like but very good and Canadian coach, Mike Cavaliere, felt all of the Canadians put in a great effort that resulted in three of the skiers advancing to the quarter-finals.

Russia’s Ivan Ivanov topped the men’s sprint, followed by Martti Jylhae of Finland in the silver medal position and Norway’s Eirik Saeves in the bronze.  A true international field, the Championships are playing host to almost 600 athletes from 37 different countries.

Top finisher for Canada was Alex Harvey of Quebec City who qualified sixth in the men’s sprint but had an unfortunate crash in the first heat and finished 16th, missing the final cut by only four positions.  The three other men competing today did not have the qualifying times to move forward.  Haakon Lenes of Banff, Alta. finished 40th, Frederic Touchette from Quebec City finished 54th and Georg Jalkotzy from Calgary was 59th.

It was the Scandinavian countries that took the gold and silver positions on the podium in the women’s sprint; Astrid Jacobsen of Norway and Charlotte Kalla of Sweden finished one-two, while Germany’s Denise Hermann finished with the bronze.

Two Thunder Bay, Ont. women made it through to the quarter-final round, but like the men, neither were able to make the cut to advance to the final round.  Kate Brennan finished a very respectable 20th and Brittany Webster close behind in 28th.

Sprint gold for Slovakia and Sweden

The schedule on the 2nd day of the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships and U-23 Cross-Country World Ski Championships in Tarvisio (ITA) Tuesday included the individual sprint competitions in the U-23 category. In the ladies' race, staged in the classical technique, the victory went to Alena Prochazkova of Slovakia. The 22-year-old Slovak was followed by Laura Valaas (USA) and Piret Pormeister of Estonia.

In the men's race, Sweden took a double victory as Robin Bryntesson took the top spot, followed by Marcus Hellner. Bryntesson posted his career-best result last weekend at the Lahti Ski Games where he ranked 15th in the World Cup sprint. Marcus Hellner finished 9th in the 15 km race in Sapporo some two weeks ago, and also won bronze with the Swedish men's relay team. Matias Strandvall of Finland – ninth in the sprint in Sapporo - collected the bronze medal.

The competitions continue Wednesday with the 5km and 10km competitions in the free technique for the Juniors as well as the individual Gundersen event in Nordic Combined.

Young Canadian Cross-Country Team Face-off against the World’s Best

Canada’s young cross-country team is testing their mettle against the world’s best junior athletes at the FIS Nordic Under-23 World Championships in Tarvisio, Italy. Six members of the under-23 team took to the snow today, each looking advance in the warm, slushy conditions.

Perianne Jones, of Almonte, Ont., battled through an extremely tight field to make it to the quarter-finals of the women’s sprint, but missed the finals by just two spots. Jones ended the day in 15th-place, which was the top Canadian result on the day.

“It was a really tight race,” said Jones. “Overall I am pleased with the result, but my goal for the future is to be a lot more aggressive.”

Amanda Ammar, of Onoway, Alta., was also in the women’s sprint, but failed to make it past the qualifying round, ending the day in 35th-place.

Alena Prochazkova, of Slovakia, was the fastest sprinter of the day, taking the gold medal. Laura Valaas, of U.S.A., came through for the silver, while Piret Pormeister, of Estonia, grabbed the bronze.

The men’s team had an equally tough day, with none of the four Canadian athletes making it past the qualifying round. Brent McMurty, of Calgary, was 32nd, David Nighbor, of North Bay, Ont., was 35th, Christopher Butler, of Thunder Bay, Ont., was 63rd, and Phillip Wood, of Orangeville, Ont., was 66th.

“This has been a valuable learning experience for our group,” said Mike Cavaliere, coach, Cross-Country Canada. “They faced conditions here we rarely see in Canada, warm and slushy. It has been an eye-opening experience and they have realized how much work they still need to do on their double poling strength.”

Winner in the men’s sprint was Robin Bryntesson, of Sweden, followed by teammate Marcus Hellner, in the silver medal position. Matias Strandvall, of Finland, finished with the bronze.

The 2007 FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships continue Wednesday.

Valaas Sprints to Silver in Italy

Laura Valaas (Wenatchee, WA), who cruised to the Cross Country SuperTour sprint title this winter, scrambled her way to the silver medal in the 1.3K classic technique sprint in the opening race of the Under-23 Cross Country Championships. All three U.S. women were in the top 13.

Slovakian Alena Prochazkova took the gold medal just ahead of Valaas, a Whitman College graduate, with Estonian Piret Pormeister in third place. Northern Michigan University racer Morgan Smyth (Vernon, VT) was eighth and Lindsay Williams (Hastings, MN), another NMU skier, finished 13th in the field of 43.

In the men's race, Swedes Robin Bryntesson and Marcus Hellner went 1-2 while Tyson Flaharty (Fairbanks, AK), an Alaska Pacific University Nordic skier, was 24th and Michael Sinnott (Sun Valley, ID), fresh from helping Dartmouth College win its first NCAA Ski Championships title in 31 years, was 25th. Brenton Knight (Anchorage, AK), a University of Alaska Anchorage skier, was 40th and Bart Dengel (Valdez, AK) from the University of Alaska Fairbanks finishing 52nd.

Valaas' medal is the first won by an American woman. Kris Freeman (Andover, NH) used the 2003 U-23s as his international launching pad, winning the opening men's event, a 30K classic race in Valdidentro, Italy. He was fourth in the pursuit, which closed those championships and a week later Freeman finished a shocking fourth in the 15K CL. In the '04 season, Freeman produced the best U.S. results in more than 20 years, finishing sixth and then fifth in two World Cup races.

Valaas joined the new CXC team from the Central Division this winter and has teamed with Caitlin Compton (Minneapolis, MN) to dominate the domestic racing. Each made her first World Championships team for Sapporo, Japan, last month; Valaas was 24th in the CL sprint at Worlds.

The Gold-Decision: Skateskis or classic skis?

In the end it was skate skis and a gold medal for Astrid Jacobsen of Norway at the Junior World Championships in Tarvisio.

She tried it only once previously in an official race. It was in the prolog at Beitostolen in the Norwegian season opener this past fall that Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen raced on skateskis and double poled the entire classic sprint course. She easily advanced from the prolog, but then switched to classic skis for the heats.

Ahead of Monday’s sprint race at junior Worlds decided that she should try using skate skis again in the relatively easy course in Tarvisio. But only to make it extra exciting and wait all the way to the finale before she pulled out the skate skis. She was the only one in the finale who skied without kick-wax.

- We had a discussion about it before the start, and Astrid was very clear in what she wanted and made that decision very firmly. She was supported by the staff, said coach Fredrik Aukland.

Aukland is now praising Jacobsen for the tough choice.

- It was very daring.

He says that Astrid has developed a lot during the last year.

- It was very positive for Astrid to train with the Norweigian National team. She has made lots of progress and is professional in every way, says Aukland.

Jacobsen had a 10 meter lead on her competitors going in to the long uphill in Monday’s final. She was caught by Charlotte Kalla (raced on kick wax) of Sweden at the top, but Astrid passed her again in the downhill and had no problem double poling to the finish and claiming the gold.

Two gold’s in two different Worlds (Sapporo and Junior Worlds) in only a few weeks says it all – The Worlds best classic sprinter in 2007.
