Neuner dominates the Sprint

With a magnificent overall performance, German youngster Magdalena Neuner presented herself in a league of her own today. The 20-year-old won the women's 7.5 km Sprint in Khanty-Mansiysk by a margin of 56.5 seconds, shooting flawlessly. Apart from logging the second quickest course time (second by two tenths of a second), Neuner also recorded one of the fastest shooting times. Only her teammate Andrea Henkel was a little faster on the course and came in as the distant second. Anna Carin Olofsson finished third, like Henkel with one error, 1:03.0 minutes behind Neuner.

Neuner was rather surprised about her performance: "The wind at the shooting range was rather gusty, but I was fortunate, it wasn't so bad while I was shooting. I just feel great at the moment, and winning by almost a minute is really amazing." Neuner thus scored her third victory in a row after her two wins at the Holmenkollen and already has six for the season.

With Olofsson finishing third and Kati Wilhelm (GER) eleventh, the Swede secured the title in the World Cup Sprint Score, ahead of Wilhelm, Henkel and Neuner.

Wilhelm was not very pleased with her day: "Eleventh rank is definitely below my expectations. I have to fight for the title now, but I'm not 100% fit at the moment." The 30-year-old is currently suffering from a slight cold.

In the World Cup Total, Wilhelm's advantage ahead of Olofsson decreased to 38 points, 34 if we consider that three results will not enter the final score. That in mind, Henkel is up in second rank, 26 points behind Wilhelm.

First Win of the Season for Roesch

Germany's Michael Roesch scored the second World Cup Victory in his career today, winning the Sprint in Khanty-Mansiysk ahead of local favorites Maxim Tchoudov and Andrei Makoveev. Although Roesch missed one of his targets at the shooting range, the 23-year-old completed his 10-km-run 8.8 seconds faster than Tchoudov and 13.4 seconds faster than Makoveev, who both shot clean.

Naturally, Roesch was very pleased with his performance in the interview after the race, and he knew whom to thank: "Most importantly, I have to thank my ski supplier and my serviceman Grossi. I had some great skis today. I didn't really think about possibly winning during the race, but being up there on the podium is the best feeling you can have."

Roesch was ahead of Tchoudov at the start of the final lap, but the Russian had the momentum initially, cheered on by the enthusiastic Russian crowd. He was ahead of Roesch at the intermediate at 8.7 km, but Roesch was running alongside Ole Einar Bjoerndalen with the ambition to cross the finishing line ahead of the Norwegian, who had started the race a full two minutes before him.

Michael Greis finished 16th and won the World Cup Sprint Score, ahead of Bjoern Ferry (eighth today) and Nikolay Kruglov (15th).
He also improved his chances to win the World Cup Total Score, again gaining some points on Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. The Norwegian finished 48th, his worst World Cup result in more than six years and his worst result in a World Cup Sprint since 1993, his first year in the World Cup.

GERMANY’S MAGDALENA NEUNER DOMINATES AT BIATHLON WORLD CUP

- Canadian’s Zina Kocher and Robin Clegg struggle to find speed on the skis -

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, RUS – It was a disappointing way to start the final Biathlon World Cup for the small Canadian contingent. Robin Clegg and Zina Kocher were the lone representatives for Canada in the men’s and women’s races in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The pair finished 59th and 49th, respectively, in the sprint event Thursday.

Clegg, a native of Ottawa, put together a solid performance on the range, with only one shooting error, but could not find the necessary speed on the snow to stay with the top group. The 29-year-old finished the race in 29 minutes 20.7 seconds, over two minutes behind the winner, Michael Roesch, of Germany. Two Russians rounded out the podium finishes, with Maxim Tchoudov taking the silver medal and Andrei Makoveev, the bronze.

Red Deer, Alta. native, Zina Kocher, has been struggling of late to find the same form that saw her win a bronze medal at the World Cup, November 29, 2006, in Ostersund, Sweden. The 24-year-old had two shooting errors and finished nearly four minutes behind Germany’s Magdalena Neuner, who was in a league of her own. Neuner completed the race in 22:34.0, +56.0 seconds faster than her closest competitor and teammate, Andrea Henkel, who took the silver. Sweden’s Anna Carin Olofsson came away with the bronze medal, +1.03 out of first.

Both Clegg and Kocher will get another chance to improve on Thursday’s result in the pursuit race. The women’s race takes place Saturday, and the men hit the snow Sunday, on the final day of Biathlon World Cup for the season.

US Men in Russia for World Cup Final

Summary: Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, March 14. Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) heads a contingent of four US biathletes who will compete in the World Cup Final starting here on Thursday.

Burke, currently ranked 23rd in the Overall World Cup Standings, is looking to close his season with some more good results here. Sunday after his 22nd place in the Mass Start in Oslo, he spoke optimistically, “I am looking forward to the final three races next week in Khanty Mansiysk. I feel like I have some more good races left in me.”

Tomorrow, Burke, and teammates Jay Hakkinen (Kasilof, AK), Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY), and Jeremy Teela (Anchorage, AK) compete in the 10K Sprint. This is the final Sprint of the season, with the US men hoping to gain enough Nations cup Points to overtake Ukraine and Italy in the battle for a top 8 finish for the season. The US men are currently in 10th place.

The top 60 in the Sprint will qualify for Saturday’s Pursuit. The week closes with Sunday’s Mass Start competitions. Burke has enough World Cup Points that he should make the Mass Start Field. Should he make the Mass Start field, he will become the first US biathlete to compete in every Mass Start during a single season.

The World Cup Final here in east central Siberia is not just another World Cup. For most of the season, the “traveling circus” of about 250 athletes, and an equal number of coaches and staff, travels across central Europe with ease. Most venues are only hours apart, so each Sunday night, teams pack the vans with ski and travel bags, rifles and anything necessary to surviving months on the road and set off for the next spot on the schedule. At times, especially when going to Scandinavia, the athletes and coaches drive while staff drives the 30 hours or so to the northern reaches of the Biathlon world.

The trip to Khanty Mansiysk is another story. First virtually everyone needs a visa, which involves paperwork, waiting for hours (and sometimes, making several trips) at a Russian Embassy on an off day in a foreign capital. Then the packing “light” for the trip to Siberia on special charter flights (four this year); teams only take what is necessary to get through the week as excess baggage charges can spoil a season’s budget. This year, all skis, and heavy gear went to Oslo airport on Sunday evening; busses for the charter flight left the US team hotel at 6 AM for a 9:30 flight. Once at the airport, retrieving ski bags and boxes from the truck to a special baggage area supplemented normal check-in. Virtually everyone took the opportunity to have a light breakfast of normal food at the airport before departure.

UTAIR, the Russian charter company from Khanty Mansiysk flies the Tupolov 154 aircraft. These tri-engine Soviet behemoths carry 95-110 passengers cramped in the rear of the aircraft while the former first class/business section is loaded with baggage under cargo nets. Despite this unusual configuration provides a fast powerful and smooth flight (comfort is not part of the trip) of four plus hours and four time zones from Oslo. Evening arrival in Khanty and the temperature is minus 9 Celsius (Oslo was plus five). After an hour or so of airport formalities: rifle inspections, visa checks and passport stamps, everyone is a moved by bus to the Hotel on Seven Hills overlooking the venue.

The drive through this “city” of 50,000 is one of contrasts. New modern office and apartment buildings abound courtesy of the booming oil business. Only blocks away, there are log cabins that look ready to collapse, even though there are lights inside and howling dogs in the yard. Strands of neon and other Christmas-like bright lights hang over the streets and downtown area where magnificent large ice sculptures dominate the city center.

With a quick move into the hotel rooms which are in small apartment style buildings with a security guard and a housemaid and cleaning lady. stationed at the door 24 hours a day, it is off to dinner. Surveying the buffet of meats and fish with gravy and lots of potatoes, everyone ate with gusto, It had been along day, and everything looked appetizing.

Having been on the ground here almost 48 hours, the fatigue of travel is slipping away. Skis are being prepared, rifles checked in and out of the locked armory for training while anticipation is building for the coming races. Because German television broadcasts the competitions live to central Europe, the starting time fro the Men’s Sprint is 5:15 PM local time. This means evening training yesterday and today under the lights. It also means a long day for the athletes of a morning run, breakfast, some dry firing, lunch, a nap, watching DVDs or reading and then training at the end of the day. It is not exactly summer in Siberia with blowing snow today and temperatures about minus five Celsius so everyone spends a lot of time inside before and after training. The dining room is the one place where everyone gathers for long meals and socializing. It is easy to see the long biathlon season is about over; even with the tough competitions ahead, there are easy smiles and jokes abound among the 24 teams here.

Thus the World Cup Final in Khanty Mansiysk is unique; it is a combination of endurance trip, cultural shock treatment and competitions all wrapped in one, far from the home of biathlon in Central Europe. However, once the first starter goes out at 5:15:30 on Thursday, everything will look like the previous eight World Cups and World Championships; 90 men trying to be the best one more time this season.

Burke 27th in World Cup Sprint Final; US Men 10th in Nations Cup

Summary: Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, March 15. Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY), with two penalties, finished 27th in this evening’s World Cup Sprint Final, leading the US men to 10th place in the Nations Cup for the first time ever.

This final 10K Sprint of the season was another closely contested competition with Burke 1:24.8 behind winner Michael Roesch of Germany, but only 12.2 seconds from 18th place. Roesch, with one penalty topped two clean shooting Russians, Maxim Tchoudov, and Andrei Makoveev by 8.8 and 13.4 seconds respectively.

The men’s competition held under the light of large glowing balloons and direct spotlights followed the Women’s Sprint, conducted in mid afternoon. Burke started strong with a solid prone stage, which had Coach Mikael Lofgren commenting, “That was a great start!” Tension built as Burke was among the top five men coming into the standing stage. With the TV cameras focused on him, he shot steadily, but missed two targets. Knowing how well Burke can shoot in the standing stage, Lofgren looked through the scope for a second time and said, “I cannot believe he missed those two.” Although he was in the middle of the 90-man field, Burke was just seconds from a top 20 finish, even with the two penalties. He continued to gain ground over the last 3.3K, passing several competitors, but could not pick up the final few seconds to put him in the top 20. Still, Burke scored more World Cup points, solidifying his 23rd position in the global standings and insuring a spot in Sunday’s 15K Mass Start.

With light snow and the temperatures falling as the competition progressed, Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY) chased his roommate during his tour of the three 3.3K loops tonight. Bailey like Burke had two penalties, but one in each stage. The left-handed shooting Bailey was battling for a top 30 finish spot, but fell 14.2 seconds short in 36th place. At the finish area, he kept waiting for the scoreboard to scroll to his name, but left after it seemed stuck at 20th place. “It was close, I know that,” he stated. I felt good on the first loop…and actually on the second, Bernd (Eisenbichler) was out there and told me I was just seconds from the top 30. I gave it everything I had, but I could tell that I was losing time. With all of the fresh snow (from an all-day storm on Wednesday), it was pretty slow out there.”

The two Alaskans on the US Biathlon Team, Jay Hakkinen (Kasilof) and Jeremy Teela (Anchorage) each had three penalties in today’s competition. They finished 53rd and 67th, 2:07.8 and 2:47.4 back. Hakkinen will join Burke and Bailey in Saturday’s 12.5K Pursuit competition.

In the battle for a top eight spot in the season-long Nations Cup standings, the US men finished 10th, just 10 points shy of ninth place Ukraine and 105 behind eighth place Italy. The US made up ground on Ukraine today but not quite enough. After picking up several hundred points on Italy in the past two weeks, the Italian men place two in the top 18 today, negating the US gains. Still, the US finished in the top 10 for the first time ever, scoring 4244 points, 1160 more points than last season, the previous US high water mark. This 10th place represents a huge step for the US Biathlon program, putting the men within striking distance of much larger teams like Sweden, Italy, and Austria.

Friday is training and recovery day for the World Cup biathletes before the season, which started November 29, ends this weekend, with Pursuit competitions on Saturday and the Mass Start on Sunday.

Neuner wins the Race, Wilhelm the Cup

Despite Magdalena Neuner's seventh victory of the season, her fourth in a row, Kati Wilhelm won the World Cup Pursuit Score – albeit by the smallest possible margin of just a single point. Yet, finishing in 20th position, Wilhelm lost the lead in the World Cup Total Score to her teammate Andrea Henkel, who ranked third at the end of the Pursuit. In an exciting dash to the finishing line, Sweden's Anna Carin Olofsson defeated Henkel by a mere 0.2 seconds, 25.3 seconds behind the winner Neuner. Neuner had four misses today, Olofsson and Henkel two each.

Olofsson will nevertheless enter the final race of the season wearing the yellow bib because the points for the last of the three results that are scratched from the Total Score will not be subtracted until after the final race. In this preliminary tally, Olofsson has the same number of points as Wilhelm (860) but one victory more than the German, Henkel is six points behind.

Henkel knows that she is in the virtual lead: "At least I'm a little bit in the yellow bib. The strategy for tomorrow will be: 'Work hard and stay calm at the shooting range'. The course is not that difficult here, that's why the shooting will be decisive."

Because of Neuner's huge advantage at the start and the relatively large gap between her and the late starters, Neuner lapped several competitors today, who were then taken out of the race by the jury. Neuner was a little sorry: "I had to lap some other athletes, although I really didn't want to do it. But they were running a bit too slowly." Running a lonely race in first rank, Neuner tried to pace herself, "so that I would make it through the shooting sessions okay. It's a lot easier when you run in a group."

Tchoudov Scores First Win - Greis Secures Overall Title

Russia's Maxim Tchoudov scored the first World Cup victory in his career today, winning the men's Pursuit in a tight three-way-duel against Bjoern Ferry (SWE) and Stian Eckhoff (NOR). In the end, the 24-year-old was 0.6 seconds ahead of Ferry and 2.1 seconds ahead of Eckhoff. All three missed two of their 20 targets today.

Logging the fastest isolated Pursuit time, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (NOR) improved from his 48th position at the start to finish ninth, but his effort eventually turned out to be in vain. Germany's Michael Greis finished 16th, with a total of six errors, and secured the title in the World Cup Total Score with one race left. The large crystal bowl will therefore go the Germany for the first time since the 1998/1999 season, when Sven Fischer had won the title.

Initially, Greis was not at all satisfied with his performance today: "I felt great, had great skis, but really messed up at the shooting range. I'm quite angry right now. I can't be so happy about the title just yet. I did profit from Ole Einar being absent from some of the races, I definitely have to admit that. As a matter of fact, he is the best."

Russia's Dmitri Iarochenko won the title in the Pursuit Score. His 21st rank today does not enter the final tally. Ole Einar Bjoerndalen ranked second in the end, just six points behind.
