Pit Stop in Holmenkollen Races On Saturday

The traditional Holmenkollen races of 30 km and 50 km at Oslo (NOR) will take place on Saturday, 17th March 2007. This year, the Holmenkollen will serve as the first trial for a pit stop in a World Cup race. The pit stop will occur in the stadium area, giving the racers an opportunity to change skis.

Here is some information on the procedure/rules:

* Each Pit Stop is min. 2 m wide – bigger nations have more pit stop boxes

* Not more than one service staff with waxing equipment is allowed to be in the pit stop – he can’t leave the pit area but he can hand over the skis to another service staff so that the skis can be re-prepared in the Waxing Cabin.

* For the ladies race: one additional pairs of skis can be used
* For the men’s race: two additional pairs of skis can be used

* Changing of skis is only allowed in the pit stop area in the stadium

* No electricity will be available in the pit stop

Aino-Kaisa Saarinen from Finland Wins Holmenkollen 30K

Aino-Kaisa Saarinen from Finland took the victory in the traditional individual start races in classic technique over 30 km at the Holmenkollen (NOR).

Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, AK) was 38th in the women's race.

For the 28-year-old Saarinen it was the first World Cup victory ever. She finished clearly 30.6 seconds ahead of her team mate and overall World Cup winner Virpi Kuitunen. Third place finisher from Slovenia Petra Majdic, was 48.6 seconds behind the winner.

The first ‘pit stop’ trial with the possibility to change the skis during the competition in the stadium worked well. All athletes on the podium changed skis after 12.5 km. Only Claudia Kuenzel-Nystad who finished fourth didn’t change her skis from the top six athletes.

The overall World Cup is already won by Virpi Kuitunen. She is in the lead with 1477 points. On second place is still Marit Bjoergen, who finished today on the 10th place, with 829 points and on third follows Katerina Neumannova, just 15 points behind Bjoergen

Virpi Kuitenen has now also won, beside the overall and sprint World Cup, the distance World Cup. She is 100 points in the lead ahead of Katerina Neumannova and she has already more victories than Neumannova. On third place follows Aino Kaisa Saarinen with 146 points behind Neumannova.

Number of participants/ participating nations: 49 ladies/ 12 nations

Weather: sunny, +5°C

Snow Conditions: Spring conditions

Special remarks:
Courses ladies: Height Differences (HD): 126m; Maximum Climb (MC): 79, Total Climb (TC): 1047m; Length of Lap: 12.5 km + 16.7 km

Aino Kaisa Saarinen (FIN): “It was a dream to win the 30 km at Holmenkollen. I felt good during the race but after 20 km I got a little bit tired. The great audience here helped me to al lot on the last 10 km. Thanks you very much! Today it was good for me to have the possibility to change the skis but in general I think we should keep this traditional 30km race like it was.”

Virpi Kuitunen (FIN): ”I took on the first lap my second best skis and changed after the first 12.5km to my best skis. The pit stop possibility during the race help a lot when we have wet conditions like today but not at each conditions. I’m happy about my result and this help us a lot to fix our goal ‘winning of the ladies nation cup’.

Petra Majdic (SLO): “To reach the podium at the traditional Holmenkollen race that is a dream. I had today a good race and good ski’s. But I also lost at least 15 seconds when I choose the wrong track at the junction to the 16.7 km in the first loop – so I have to skied back to the right course.”

Hjelmeset Wins Holmenkollen 50K

Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset from Norway took the victory in the traditional individual start races in classic technique over 50 km at the Holmenkollen (NOR).

Kris Freeman (Andover, NH) finished 21st in the sunny, 45-degree weather. Brian McKeever of Canada finished 40th. They were the only two North Americans racing.

The 35-year-old Hjelmeset won this traditional World Cup race for the first time just 9.8 seconds ahead of the overall World Cup winner Tobias Angerer (GER). Third place was Hjelmeset’s team mate Frode Estil (NOR, +31.8 seconds). Hjelmeset started only 30 seconds behind Estil in the individual start race, and overtook him after the first few kilometers. The two Norwegian were skiing nearly the whole race together and could help each other.

Hjelmeset has been on quite a roll recently. He also won the 50km mass start race at the World Championships in Sapporo, and today was his second victory in one week after the success in Lahti over the 15km in classical style. The 34-year-old Estil managed third place, the second podium in his last season of his career.

The overall World Cup is already won by Tobias Angerer. He is in the lead with 1031 points. Second place is still Alexander Legkov (RUS, 573), who didn’t compete today because he was ill. On third place follows Eldar Roenning, just 19 points behind Legkov.

Tobias Angerer, with his second place today, also won the distance World Cup with a total of 492 points. Second place is Frenchman Vincent Vittoz, wo didn’t compete in today’s race, with 370 points. Third place is now Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset with 334 points.

Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset (NOR): “It was an amazing race today. It is great to win here in front of the audience from Holmenkollen. At the end of my race I was really tired but Frode (Estil) helped me a lot and so I could manage the victory. Thanks to Frode – I think without his help Tobias would be the winner. But I must also say that Tobias (Angerer) is a great skier, he compete in nearly all races this season and was from the beginning to the end in a fabulous shape.”

Tobias Angerer (GER): ”It was a perfect race for me. In the first part my skis were a little bit slippery but than I change the skis and that was good. I felt good during the race but at the end I had not enough power to push harder and maybe win the race. It is amazing to ski on this course with this great audience. I’m happy that I could defend my overall World Cup and also the distance World Cup.”

Frode Estil (NOR): “To finish on a podium place in my last 50 km that is great. The race was hard but I could skied together with Odd-Bjoern (Hjelmeset) and that helped me a lot. We understand each other without any words. When I realized that Odd-Bjoern is fighting for the victory I try to help me and pushed as much as I could. Now I maybe should teach Odd-Bjoern in skating that he will be prepared for the 50km in free technique in Liberec 2009. Next weekend, in my last World Cup race, I will give my best. The track in Falun fits me well.”

Freeman 21st in 50K CL at Holmenkollen

Kris Freeman (Andover, NH) finished 21st Saturday in the men's 50K classic race at Holmenkollen in sunny, 45-degree weather, a race won by newly crowned 50K CL world champion Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset of Norway. Kikkan Randall(Anchorage, AK) was 38th in the women's 30K CL behind Finland's Aino Kaisa Saarinen.

Hjelmeset, who edged teammate and close friend Frode Estil by four-tenths of a second for the 50K title at the 2007 FIS Nordic World Championships in Japan earlier this month, won in 2:17.22; that was a mass-start race and Saturday's race had a traditional, 30-second interval start. World Cup champion Tobias Angerer of Germany was second in the field of 48 (2:17.31.8) and Estil was third, another 22 seconds off the pace.

Freeman, who was 27th in the 50K CL at Holmenkollen two years ago, finished with a time of 2:23.26.9. Lars Flora (Anchorage, AK) had to scratch because of sickness.

"Kris wanted to start at a pace he could maintain and he did well until he took a spill late in the race. These are three of the toughest laps anyone can ski and today the course was very technical on some places - ice covered with slush, so the downhills were especially tricky," Head Coach Pete Vordenberg said. "He was heading to a top-15 but he took a tumble and that took him out of it, but Kris did a good job. I've got no complaints with his race."

Saarinen finished in 1:23.55.7, a half-minute ahead of World Cup champ and teammate Virpi Kuitunen with Slovenian Petra Majdic in third place. Randall, the lone American and looking to build her base beyond her sprint skills, finished in 1:34.09.7.

"I'm really happy with where we are," Vordenberg said. "We've made good progress this year, but just because you've made one good step doesn't mean the you'll make the next one, so we have to keep working on things...and we know what we need to do. After 2003 [when Freeman was fourth and Carl Swenson, now retired, was fifth in races at Worlds and the next year when Freeman had fifth- and sixth-place results in World Cups, and the sprinters began to emerge], we thought, 'We're on our way.' And it didn't happen.

"Just like in a race if you get a good first split, it doesn't mean you're on your way, either. We have a tremendous amount of work to do, but I'm so encouraged by what I've seen and what we've done," Vordenberg said. "Now we need to make that second step."

The World Cup tour heads in Sweden for its final two races - classic technical sprints Wednesday around the Royal Palace in Stockholm and pursuits next Saturday at the Swedish Ski Games in Falun.
